5 Developmental Signs Your Child Is Truly Ready to Potty Train

Potty training can feel like a ticking clock, especially when your toddler turns two and the pressure kicks in. However, the truth most people miss: potty training isn’t a one-step task. It’s a developmental process involving multiple systems of the brain and body.

As an OT and mom of three, I’ve seen the difference between “old enough” and truly ready. Here are five signs your child may be developmentally prepared to begin, beyond just reaching a certain age.

5 Developmental Signs Your Child Is Truly Ready to Potty Train

  1. Interoceptive Awareness
They know when they have to go — before they go. If they only tell you once it’s too late, their body awareness still needs time to catch up.
  2. Motor Planning Skills
They can sequence steps like pulling pants down, sitting on the toilet, wiping, and flushing. It doesn’t have to be perfect, but they need to understand how to complete the process.
  3. Language or Communication
They can tell you when they need to go — through words, signs, or gestures — in time to act on it.
  4. Sensory Tolerance
They can sit on the potty, handle wiping, flushing, and washing hands without sensory overload or emotional shutdown.
  5. Emotional Regulation
They’re able to try, fail, and try again without meltdowns derailing the process. If they’re still easily dysregulated by small challenges, it might not be time just yet.

Bottom Line? Don’t Rush It.

Potty training is more than a parenting milestone — it’s a neurological one. If your child isn’t showing these signs yet, it doesn’t mean you’ve failed. It means they’re still developing, and development can’t be forced.
